Hoarder, Pack Rat, or Collector ~~~
What is the difference between a hoarder, pack rat, or collector? Hoarder is now the official word along with a scale to identify clutter and the surroundings. When I was growing up people would say they are a “pack rat”. I often here people now say they are a “collector”. The question shouldn’t be what is the difference, because in each scenario people are collecting things and the questions that should be asked are: do you have room for it, why are you saving it, are you currently using it, and does it bring you joy?
People like to surround themselves with things that bring them joy. The challenge becomes when it is too much stuff and you can no longer find joy in your surroundings, come to think of it, you can no longer find a light bulb. This is usually when I am called in to help. I am a Professional Organizer, a Member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO).
As a home organizer, I am hired to help get people organized. The most common challenges are closet, pantry, and paperwork. I try to explain to them that an 8 ounce glass of water only holds 8 ounces of water. I read the book by Marie Kondo – “the life changing magic of tidying up –the Japanese art of organizing”. There was one thing that she said that struck a chord with me, “does it bring you joy”. This has been so helpful with those lovely ladies whose collections have turned into clutter.
If you find that you have challenges with keeping your home uncluttered and full of joy, contact me and I would love to help you.
