Do you feel groovy about paperwork? Most people do not, especially tax time. I went to an organizing client's home this week and the project was to tackle paperwork and mail. There were piles in the dining room, the foyer, the kitchen, and the office. When I questioned her about each pile, it was met with a blank stare. Typical response followed by a nervous laugh.
Before I give you tips on organizing paperwork, I am so dating myself with this title! Ever have totally silly days. Ever have stressful days and one thing can have you fall over laughing. Yep, that happened to me. Not sure why, but the words to the song - Feeling Groovy by Simon & Garfunkel popped in my head. Do not go to You Tube, because if you do it may take awhile to get the song out of your head. "Always groovy"
Here are a 3 tips that I gave my client:
- Paint her office a friendly color with better lighting. "It looks like a dungeon" I told her, she agreed and laugh. Truth was her office was not inviting.
- We then shredded, recycled, filed paperwork
- Set up 2 inviting work stations. The one in the foyer we place the immediate to do items on the side board, added chunky candle holders, and a colorful bowl with a matching nik nak. With the space decorative, it no longer has room for the messy. The area in the kitchen was perfect for vertical baskets to contain incoming mail and children's artwork and such.
The two areas were appealing, organized, and functional. The best part was we made use of items she already own. She was happy with the uncluttered results.
