Are you trying to fit in?
Have you ever heard a child come home from school and say “I am trying to fit in”. Kids look around and see the cool kids and want to be them. Growing up I have to admit, I hung out with the cool kids, but it wasn’t always fun. They were the mean girls and you always know who the leader is. In order to stay in the group, you pretty much keep your mouth shut and follow the rules.
Fast forward to adulthood and the same game is still being played out. Somewhere along the line I decided I wanted to stop trying to fit in have the friends that I like and live by my own rules. My heart went out to other people. That’s a little tricky because some people mistaken friendliness for vulnerability and that was not me. In order to not be hurt, I set up a wall and didn’t let people in.
While writing my book Uncluttered: Discovering Strength and Purpose in the Chaos of life, I journaled my thoughts. I began to see while organizing closets and other spaces with my clients that there was more going on than a messy surrounding. They were struggling. They were like me, hiding behind a mask of smiles and trying to fit in. During that time I found myself and became comfortable with me. I don’t need to fit in a certain crowd, I want to enjoy many different groups of people and make an impact in their lives.
A friend of mine Christine Gallagher of She’s Got Client, recently wrote a blog saying the same thing. I say this and share this that you are not alone.
“I’ve always felt different.
Maybe you’ve felt this too.
When I was younger, this meant that I often felt I didn’t fit in. People didn’t “get” me. Sometimes I was bullied.
There were lots of tears shed.
Being “different” back then had a very negative connotation.
Now, as an adult and a business owner, I’ve learned that by taking some sharp left turns away from what “everybody else” is doing, you actually open up new opportunities.
You also re-energize your passion.
You stand out as a leader.
You change more lives and manifest more abundance.”
