Fun with moving ~~
The thought of moving can feel exciting, but quickly turn to feeling overwhelming. Where do you even start? You look around your home and all you see is stuff. Stuff everywhere. How do you even begin the thought of packing? Another thought that may running through your head is “I don’t even want to bring some of this stuff with me, I want a fresh beginning”. There are some who are downsizing and thus becomes the challenge of, gasp, wait for it, “purging”.
As a home organizer and moving coordinator, it is better to start the process early on then wait until the last minute. Take a breath and a piece of paper and pen and let’s start taking notes.
The best thing to do is to create a check list of all the spaces in your home and their function. Next, gather together all like with like items and from there decide which items don’t make the cut. Things that will be purged; you should decide if you want to toss, donate, or sell. It probably sounds over simplified, but these couple of steps are tremendous.
Once you have chosen your new home; measure the spaces, closets, and count cabinets and drawers. This is critical in making sure you know if there is room for your things and where they will be placed. That includes: shoes, kitchen, and furniture layout.
When packing it is important to have boxes properly labelled and color coded. You don’t want the pots and pans to be upstairs in a guest room. Pack boxes and suitcases as though you are camping for a couple of weeks. Keep track of your important paperwork and the checkbook.
For those of you who do not have time to move and with the dreaded unpacking, there are professional organizers like myself who can assist you. We can also make sure you have a reputable mover and make the process a little less stressful.
